them safer. Alcohol and cars kill lots of people, and cause a lot of people to spend money on legal defense and time in jail. This 25 year push at drunk driving has been sincere on one hand, but simply about money on the other. Groups who are against this are lawyers, and professional prison owners. It would be far cheaper for society to equip every car than it is to run the legal and prison system now in place. And, (this is big) it would save more lives. Drunk driving deaths would be darn near zero. Despite all the costs, the present system does not stop DD deaths. As long as we have a society that condones using alcohol, and condones using cars, we set it up to kill people. The public has resisted a lot of mandatory safety equipment that has ended up saving lives. If you could choose between your spouse or child being killed by a drunk driver, and mandatory DD equipment, it would be no-brainer for each of us.
